1901 Walsh Family . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . #4

Our Walsh Families in the 1901 Irish Census

The Irish census of 1901 & 1912 are the earliest available.  The returns for 1831-1871 were destroyed 22 June 1922 during the Irish Civil War in a fire at the Public Record Office of Ireland now the National Archives of Ireland.  The 1881 and 1891 were pulped for paper by the British during WW1.  These were the only census records the British destroyed for this purpose.

The 1901 census consisted of four forms/pages for each household.  Three of the forms have been attached below.
1.  Enumerator's abstract - details of number of houses in townland & occupants
2.  Household - filled in and signed by head of household
3.  House & Building - details of the houses

Following are “our” Walsh families who residing in Mayo during this census.

  • Hugh Walsh

  • John Walsh, brother of Hugh

  • Michael Walsh, son of Hugh

Cloonleedin Walsh Family . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . #3

WALSH Family of Mayo, Ireland Descendant Chart

February 2014

I use Reunion for Macintosh as my genealogy software.  Below is a four generation chart for the WALSH Family.  The purple represents the first generation with Martin WALSH, second generation is orange, third generation yellow and fourth green.  Most persons in the succeeding generations are alive therefore only four generations are posted.  You will note many unknowns, as the date and place of birth, death and marriages.  I am not including documentation now.  My intention is to post family group sheets and give the documentation at that time.

It is my hope that  many of the unknowns will be discovered.   Then we will be able to complete our family history.  Personally, a unknown is my great grandmother, Bridget GARVIN WALSH, death date and place.  Bridget was alive in 1914 when her husband John WALSH died.  I have found no record of her after that date.

We have many families here including the WALSH.  There is PEACE, HERBERT,  CORCORAN,  GARVIN,  DONNELLY,  DILLON,  RUDDY,  CONNOR,  McKEON,  SANFORD,  McHALE,  QUIN,  TAYLOR,  CULLEN, GILLESPIE, TIVNAN, BRESLANE, and the unknowns.

Bridget WALSH #2 is on the above page 6 and Bridget WALSH #3 is on page 8

Do you know their location? . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .#2

WHERE DID THE BRIDGET'S GO -

Bridget #1 -
I have no additional information of this Bridget.  When Bridget WALSH arrived in 1897 she stated she was going to Mrs. MURPHY in West Milton, Saratoga County, New York.  It would be helpful if Mrs. MURPHY could be located in the 1900 census or any other source in West Milton.  The 1900 U.S. census has a Bridget MURPHY, wife of Patrick, lived in Milton, Saratoga County, New York.  There are no other people living in this household.  The death certificate and cemetery records for this Bridget MURPHY stated she was born in Tipperary, parents Michael READY and Mary O’BRIEN.  Patrick was born in Queens County, Ireland.        UPDATE - See Post #20

Bridget Walsh McHale 1959 *

Bridget #2
Bridget WALSH McHALE (1880-1971) was a daughter of  John WALSH (1842-1914) and Bridget GARVIN (1845- ).  She married Michael Joseph McHALE in Baltimore, Maryland, U.S.A. shortly after her arrival.  Bridget and Michael were the parents of three daughters but had no grandchildren. Michael’s parents were John McHALE and Bridget Delia O’MALLEY who were married in 1868 in Kilfian Parish, Mayo.

Bridget #3 -
Bridget WALSH was the daughter of Michael WALSH (ca 1860- ) and Bridget BRESLANE (1863- ) who married 16 February 1885 at Ardagh Chapel, County Mayo.  Bridget #2 and Bridget #3 are first cousins, once removed as Michael is Bridget #2’s uncle.  Michael’s father was Patrick WALSH.

Bridget is found as an 11 year old in the 1901 Irish census of Rathreagh Parish, Townland Carrowkeel.  Also in the household are her father Michael age 40, mother Bridget 38, brother Patrick 15, sister Mary 14, brother John 7, sister Ellen 5, sister Maggie 2 and brother Michael 3 months.  In this census, her sister Catherine age 12 is found with grandmother Ellen BRISLANE in Townland Cloonagh More.

In 1905 brother Patrick age 19 and sister Catherine age 16 immigrated to the U.S. to join their Aunt Mary Rouse in Tuxedo, New York.

After her arrival in New York in 1909, Bridget was enumerated in the 1910 census of Tuxedo, New York age 19 and a servant/kitchen cook in the household of Reverend George W. Douglas.  Also in this home was Mary ROUSE, a cook and widow who was born in Ireland in 1866.  Mary is the person Bridget was to join when she immigrated.  Mary’s maiden name and marriage is unknown.  From immigration and census records it is known that she was an aunt to Bridget and immigrated in 1885.  Bridget and Mary are found with the same family in the 1920 census in Manhattan, New York.  Bridget was then age 26, a kitchen maid/cook.  I have no knowledge of Bridget WALSH #3 after this date.

Does anyone have more information of Bridget #1 or Bridget #3?
