In late 2017 the online digitized Irish Civil Records at IrishGenealogy.ie were searched to see if there was additional information on “our” Garvin family.  Garvin was not a common name in Mayo in the 1800’s.  To my delight another daughter was discovered for Anthony GARVIN in the marriage records. 

      Honor Garvey of Carton Rathroe, daughter of Anthony Garvey,   

      married John BARRETT  26 February 1876  at the Chapel of Kilfian, 

      Mayo.  

   Honor and John had nine children.  When the births were registered the name of the mother was -  Honor BARRETT formerly GARVIN -  in six of the births.

   Honor was born ca 1851-1854 according to her reported age in the 1901 and 1911 census of Coolnabinnia, Mayo, Ireland.  She died in 1920 and was buried at Kilmurray Cemetery, Mayo.  John BARRETT, her husband, died in 1931.

Garvin DNA

   Another DNA Match - October 2018.  The granddaughter of Honor GARVIN and John BARRETT is a match with Ancestry DNA.  We share 173 centimorgans which makes us 2c1r, second cousins once removed.  I now correspond with several members of the Honor GARVIN/John BARRETT family.

DNA UPDATE - October 2018

   Ancestry has update their DNA estimate. My Ireland/Scotland is now 58%.  It has increased 10% from their previous calculation.

Until recently written documents and oral recollection were the basis of genealogical research and building family trees.  At the beginning of the 21st century DNA testing became the new tool for discovering family history.

Testing for DNA is popular in the USA where most people who have taken the various tests DNA live.  It has been estimated that over 12 million persons have tested their DNA.

I tested with Ancestry and FamilyTree several years ago. With Ancestry, I am 48% Ireland/Scotland/Wales & 5% English.  FamilyTree results is are British Isles 55%.  My mitochondrial haplogroup is J.  Mitochondrial DNA is inherited from the female line therefore from my great grandmother Margaret MAHADY, grandmother Anne DONNELLY, my mother, myself, then to my daughters, and granddaughters.

There have been several successful finds/matches on my grandfather Thomas WALSH line.

On my grandmother, Anne DONNLLY, line Ancestry DNA has recently discovered several matches.  My WALSH  & DONNELLY families were in the Kilfian Parish and the newly discovered DONNELLY families are in Ballycastle Parish.  Below is a image of the Catholic Dioceses at the National Library of Ireland highlighting Ballycastle and Kilfian Dioceses of County Mayo.  These two are adjacent to one another.
                                                   

One of the newly found DNA cousin's ancestor was Peter DONNELLY of Ballycastle, County Mayo.   Our relationship is rated “Confidence Good, Predicted Relationship: 4th cousin”.  I share 22.8 centimorgans with this DNA cousin.  I believe this match may be a 3rd cousin.  My great grandfather John “Jack” DONNELLY was born ca 1821 and died 1 August 1912 at Ballygowan, County Mayo.  It is presently my belief John DONNELLY and Peter DONNELLY may be brothers.


Peter DONNELLY 1822-1892

Peter was born ca 1822, died 10 March 1892 at Glenurla, Ballycastle, Mayo.  Peter married Sarah TOYE who died at Glenurla  5 May 1894.  They were the parents of the following 7 children:

1.  Mary DONNELLY born ca 1861 County Mayo, died 14 March 1909, Springfield, Massachusetts, USA; married Charles CHEVALIER, 21 November 1891, Springfield, Massachusetts, USA.  Their children were Mary, Sarah Regina, Albert Henry

2.  Catherine DONNELLY born ca 1863, died 21 February 1938, Glenurla, Ballycastle, Mayo; married John McDONNELL 3 July 1902, Chapel of Ballycastle, Mayo.  They had no issue.

3.  Martin DONNELLY born 4 December 1865, Ballymachugh, Ballycastle, Mayo.  His birth was recorded in the Irish Civil Records of Births & his baptism-10 December 1865 at Ballycastle Parish, Mayo.  Martin died 20 June 1933 at Glenurla, Ballycastle, Mayo.  Martin married twice - first, 4 February 1891 Chapel of Ballycastle, Mayo to Catherine McCANDRESS who died 16 July 1904.  They had 5 sons - Martin, Pat, Michael, Thomas & John.  After the death of his wife Martin married Catherine BELL, 3 February 1906 at the Church of Ballycastle, Mayo.  There were no children from this union.

4.  Sarah DONNELLY born March 1868 at Ballymachugh, Ballycastle, Mayo.  Her birth was not recorded in the Civil Records, she stated her birth date in the U.S. census.  Sarah died 15 April 1940 Harford, Connecticut, USA.  Married John J. SHEA (1865-1917) 13 May 1891 in Springfield, Massachusetts USA

5.  Honoria “Nora" DONNELLY born 22 March 1868 Ballymachugh, Ballycastle, Mayo, her birth was recorded in the Irish Civil Records of Births.  Nora died 16 July 1917 at Wethersfield, Connecticut, USA.  She never married.

6.  John DONNELLY born 10 May 1871, Ballymachugh, Ballycastle, Mayo & baptized 14 May 1871 at Ballycastle Parish  His birth recorded in the Irish Civil Records of Births.

 7.  Peter DONNELLY born 25 April 1873 Ballymachugh, Ballycastle, Mayo & baptized 4 May 1873 at Ballycastle Parish  His birth record was recorded in the Irish Civil Records of Births.  Peter died 27 February 1959 Brookline, Norfolk, Massachusetts; Peter married Ann HENRY 27 October 1901 in Brookline, Norfolk, Massachusetts, USA.  Ann died before 1920.  They were the parents of James, Mary, Joseph, Sarah, Helen.

Ancestry has discovered another DONNELLY DNA match.  Once again, I believe this may be a brother or cousin of “my” John DONNELLY.  This match is to a grandchild of Patrick Donnelly, first child of Michael Donnelly.  This DNA cousin and I share 53 centimorgans.


Michael DONNELLY 1818-1898

Michael Donnelly was born ca 1818 in County Mayo and died 6 October 1898 at Kilbride, Mayo.  Michael married Bridget BARRETT ca 1863 in Mayo. 

Michael and Bridget were the parents of the following seven known children.  These births were recorded in the County Mayo,  Civil Registration District - Killala,  District of Ballycastle,  Townland-Kilbride.  Their baptisms were at Ballycastle Parish, County Mayo.

1.  Patrick DONNELLY   1864-1926   Born ca March 1864 in Kilbride, Mayo.  Patrick’s birth was not documented in the Irish civil registrations or the Ballycastle Parish baptisms as his siblings.  Irish civil registrations started in January 1864 and compliance was spotty in the beginning.  The Ballycastle Parish baptism records begin in August 1864.  Patrick immigrated to the U.S. where he married Annie McMahan  21 July 1897 at Butte, Silver Bow, Montana.  On the marriage license Patrick named his parents and place of birth in Ireland.   Patrick and Annie were the parents of six - Eileen Theresa born in Montana, John, Michael Clancy, Thomas, Catherine Maria, Joseph Patrick.   The remaining five were born in the state of Washington.  In April 1926 Patrick died in Tacoma, Pierce, Washington.  His wife Annie died 31 December 1947 in Seattle, King, Washington.

2.  Michael DONNELLY   1866-_   Born 24 July 1866.  The baptism was not found. The 1901 Irish census of Kilbride, Lackan North, Mayo found Michael DONNELLY, single, age 30, living with Bridget DONNELLY, his mother.  There were no other Donnellys in Kilbride.  I believe he may be the Michael DONNELLY of Carrakillean, father Michael, who in 1909 married Catherine KEARNS in Crossmolina Parish, Mayo.  This couple was found in the 1911 Irish census living in Mayo, townland Carrakillean - DONNELLY Michael age 42, wife Kate age 24 and daughter Bridget, an infant.
    
3.  Eleanor/Ellen DONNELLY  1869-1945    Born 13 December 1869.  Her birth registration name was Eleanor, the only time the name was used.  She  was baptized as Ellen, the name she used for the rest of her life.   Ellen married John TIGHE on 18 August 1903 at the Catholic Chapel of Ballycastle.  Ellen and John were the parents of five known children - Mary 1904, Patrick 1906, John 1908, Michael 1910, James 1912.   Ellen died 19 October 1945 at Kilbride, Mayo.

4.  Margaret DONNELLY  1872-_    Birth was 7 July 1872.

5.  Honor DONNELLY   1876-_   Honor’s baptism was recorded 6 January 1876

6.  John DONNELLY   1879-1879    A twin, birth 17 April 1879 and death 20 September 1879 from
bronchitis.

7.  Sidney (female) DONNELLY   1879-1899   A twin, birth 17 April 1879.  She was baptized Cecilia, the only time this name was used.  Sidney’s cause of death was phthisis, pulmonary tuberculosis, 2 June 1899 at Kilbride, Mayo.

PETTY SESSIONS COURT 1828-1912 . . . . . . #15

The Petty Sessions was the lowest court in Ireland and handled civil and some criminal matters.  This court heard minor disputes and misdemeanors such as farm animals trespassing on neighbors property, public drunkenness, petty assaults, minor thief, disputes between persons etc.  The court was lead by a Justice of the Peace who did not receive a salary therefore was headed by a local landowner or gentleman.  There was no jury.  Petty Sessions met weekly or monthly depending on the volume of cases to be heard.  The court included a clerk who recorded the details on registers and collected any fines.  These registers, which have been indexed, are available in digitized form at findmypast.com.  There were 22 Petty Session Courts in County Mayo.  The Killala Court registers are available in years 1861-1911.

Finding these records allows us to observe the daily life of elusive ancestors.  Our DONNELLY and WALSH families appeared in these court records.  The index did not show our GARVIN or MAHEDY families.

John STONES, a neighbor of John DONNELLY, had difficulty keeping his cows and pigs out of DONNELLY'S land between 1874 and 1884.  Three times John DONNELLY took STONES to Killala Petty Sessions Court because the animals were trespassing.

Photos from Cloonaleedin, the townland in Co. Mayo, where our Walsh family originated.  Pictured below are two views of the flagstone floor which has been preserved at the Walsh ancestral home.  A new home has been built next to the original structure.  Pictured in the first photo is the crane which was taken from the old fireplace hearth.  The photos were taken ca 2015 by a great grandson of John Walsh and Bridget Garvin with the permission of the current resident. 



The crane, black metal structure on the right, is a horizontally swinging arm by a fireplace used for
suspending pots over the fire.  Look close to see the arm.  The trees in the background make it a bit
difficult to see.  Note kettles hanging from arm.

The Ordnance Survey Office was established in 1824 to undertake a townland survey of Ireland and map the entire country.  The surveyors who understood this task were also charged with the task of examining individual place-names details and variants to determine a suitable spelling for each name which did not already have a standardized English form and with recording this information in a series of volumes known as Name Books.

Other details were also recorded, such as local monuments, building of note, archaeological objects etc. making them a very interesting and useful addition to local information,

Volumes of Letters comprising the correspondence between the field researchers and the Ordnance Survey office were also published and provide further details of interest concerning the history of places countrywide."

This Townland belongs to a Mr. W. Handy, who resides in Birr, Kings CO., Agent Mr P McLaughlin, Crossmolina.  It is held by tenants at will at £1. p.(per) acre.  Soil a gravelly clay, the genrl. produce oats, flax & potatoes.  There are but 3 farmers living here apparently comfortable.  Houses stone.  Nothing remarkable to be noticed.  Contains 56 a.(acres) 2 r.(rood) 28 p.(perch) including about 25 a.(acres) of bog.

Years passed between the Names Books survey, the mapping, and publication of Griffith's Valuattion.  At the time of publication Cloonaleedin's owner was John Orme and the occupiers were Martin WALSH, Mary NEARY, and Martin TWOHILL

RECENT FINDS . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . #13

1.  BRIDGET WALSH #1

 My first post on Our Mayo Families was Three Bridget Walsh's from Ireland to Ellis Island, New York.  The second post concerned who they were and location of the three Bridget's after their arrival in New York.   At that time I did not know anything concerning Bridget #1.

I am confident that I now know the parents of  Bridget #1.

Bridget Walsh, age 19, arrived at Ellis Island in 1897 with Anne DONNELLY in 1897.  Anne and family lived in the townland of Ballygowen, County Mayo.  In the 1901 and 1911 Irish census the next door neighbor of the Donnelly family was Anthony WALSH, a blacksmith, and his wife Bridget.  On the 21 of April 1877 daughter Bridget WALSH was born to Anthony WALSH, a blacksmith, and Bridget FLAHERTY WALSH of Ballygowen.

I still do not know what happened to Bridget the daughter of Anthony after arriving at Ellis Island.

Bridget #3 who immigrated in 1909 with Bridget Walsh McHale (Bridget #2) is still unknown after the 1920 census where she was enumerated as a kitchen maid/cook to a family in New York City.

My grandparents home was completely destroyed by fire in 1950.  Many of the answers to these and other Irish genealogical questions went up in flames early in the morning hours of that June day.

2.  MICHAEL WALSH, son of John WALSH & Bridget GARVIN

John WALSH and Bridget GARVIN of Cloonaleedin, Kilfian were the parents of 10 children born between 1868 and 1887.  Five of the children I have been able to document with birth, marriage, death, and census records.  Until recently the other five I only found birth dates and some census records.  The number documented is now six.

Michael WALSH, the 6th child, was born 18 August 1877 in Cloonaleedin, Parish of Kilfian.  The 1901 & 1911 census found Michael at Cloonaleedin with his parents.  By 1911 he was the only child who remained at the homestead.  Mary Ellen HARRISON from Clooneenmore, Easkey, Co Sligo became the wife of Michael 10 December 1916 in Easkey.  The only record discovered of this marriage are photos of the pages in the parish book.  Michael and Mary Ellen resided in Cooga, Easkey, Sligo.  They are buried at Roslea Cemetery, Easkey.  Michael died 22 Jan 1951 and Mary Ellen eleven years later 30 May 1962.  Michael's birth and death civil records can be founds at: https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/en/
                                 
At this time I only know of one child of this marriage.  Michael Joseph “Josie” WALSH was born 7 September 1919 in Cooga, Easkey, Silgo. Michael emigrated to the US in 18 April 1948 with his new bride Celia “Sheila” WALL aboard the SS Washington from Cobh.  Michael died 14 April 2004 and is buried at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Their daughter Eileen WALSH (1952-2013) married Francis DOYLE in Pennsylvania.

Michael’s great grandson Congressman Brendan Francis BOYLE has been a member of the US House of Representatives, representing a district near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania since January 2015.  Brendan’s brother Kevin BOYLE is also in politics as he is a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives.

In August 2017 Brendan F. BOYLE, his father, and brother visited County Sligo and Cloonaleedin, Kilfian, Co Mayo.  John WALSH, the current resident, of the home in Cloonaleedin presented Brenden BOYLE  sods of turf.  The floor/flagstones of the Walsh home of John and Bridget remains next to John’s home.

There are stories of each of the above but no documentation other than their births.

3.   ANOTHER WALSH/GARVIN FAMILY

There was second John WALSH and Bridget GARVIN family in County Mayo during the time period as “our” WALSH/GARVIN family.  This family was from Glendagh, Ballycastle.  Currently the only information I have on this family is son Thomas WALSH born ca 1860 and a daughter Eleanor WALSH born 2 April 1868.  Thomas WALSH of Glenedagh age 25 married Bridget WINTERS of Ballycastle in 1885 at the Chapel of Ballycastle.  Thomas/1860 and family immigrated in the late 1890s to Michigan, US  Their family, at that time, consisted of six children born between 1888-1895 Ballycastle, County Mayo.
