Thomas Walsh 1869-1953 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . #7

THOMAS WALSH  1869 - 1953

son of John WALSH and Bridget GARVIN

The following was written by Tom’s cousin John J. Walsh* and given to Kathleen Walsh Lincoln in 1953.

THOMAS WALSH

His name was Thomas Walsh,
A member of a famous Irish clan,
And he left his home in Leedian,                       Cloonaleedin, townland where Thomas was born
Not far from Ballinglen.                                      A river near Ballycastle, County Mayo

He was like all the Irish,
Persecuted by the British Crown,
They grabbed their land and cattle too,
And kept the natives down.

He left his home in Kilfian,                               The local parish, both religious & civil
Not far from Old Tonroe,                                  Tonroe - townland in an adjacent parish
And he sailed away from Ireland,
And the County of Mayo.

He sailed from Cork in Munster,                     Munster one of four Ireland provinces.  Mayo is in
With a friend named Pat McHale                        Connacht, their function now is historical
And they landed in the Isle of Ellis,
Far away from Granuaile.                                Irish Pirate Queen born County Mayo, contemporary of
                                                                            Queen Elizabeth I
Tom went to work in a navy yard,
Way down in Newport News, Virginia.
And he did his work so skillfully,
He soon got a increase in pay.

From Newport News, Tom went to Frostburg,
And thence to the University of Morgantown.
He studied mining in all its scopes,
And won a certificate of renown.

He worked the mines of both Virginias,
He installed many safety devices therein.
As he was trained to measure gas and air,
It was for the safety of the men.

And with this wondrous knowledge
Of the canyons in the ground,
It was said of the safety measures he installed,
No better could be found.

After many years of mining,
Over thirty years or more.
Tom decided to come up for air.
And he opened a grocery store.

He served his friends and neighbors,
With brands that were the best.
He felt at ease in doing so
And felt happy for the rest.

He had a very fine family.
That took pride in what he had done,
And they miss him now above all,
At the setting of his sun.

Now Tom has gone to his reward,
And he is looking down with pride.
On the safety measures he installed
Without which many would have died.

John J. WALSH -  Kate Walsh Lincoln referred to him as cousin of her father.  John lived in Astoria, New York, USA.  Kate did say he had five sons and one daughter.  She did not elaborate the relationship.   I attempted to contact John or his family in the 1980’s at a address furnished by Aunt Kate.  My letters were returned unopened.

Is anyone in contact with the family of John WALSH?  He would be the grandson of Martin WALSH.

1911 Walsh Family . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . #5

The Walsh families in the 1911 Irish Census

Hugh WALSH had died between the 1901 and 1911 census.  His son Patrick and his family are now living in Hugh's house in Cloonaleedin.  John WALSH was still in Cloonaleedin.  His wife Bridget GARVIN WALSH has also died during this period.  I currently do not know the death dates or burials of Hugh and Bridget.  Michael WALSH, son of Hugh and father of Bridget #3, continued to live in Carrowkeel.

Cloonaleedin is a townland of 56 acres.  Its Irish name & translation is Cluain a'Lidin meaning Leedan’s lawn or meadow.  The destruction of the 1841-1891 census left a void for those interested in family history.  The following British abstracts for those census years is a bit of help.
In 1841 there were 21 persons and 5 occupied houses in Cloonaleedin
  1851 - 34 persons and 5 houses
  1861 - 7 persons, 4 male 3 female and 1 house
  1871 - 9 persons, 4 male, 5 female and 2 houses

The population of Cloonaleedin in the 1851 census is interesting.  During this period Mayo had a 30% decline in population due to the Great Potato Famine.

The same format/placement of the census pages
1.  Enumerator's abstract - details of number of houses in townland & occupants
2.  Household - filled in and signed by head of household
3.  House & Building - details of the houses

Michael WALSH of Carrowkeel
Carrowkeel has 184 acres, Irish name Cartun Ratha Ruaidh meaning the quarter of the red fort or narrow quarter.
  1841 - 144 persons and 25 houses in Carrowkeel
  1851 - 64 persons; 10 houses
  1861 - 37 persons, 18 male, 19 female; 6 houses
  1871 - 11 persons, 6 male, 5 female; 2 houses

1901 Walsh Family . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . #4

Our Walsh Families in the 1901 Irish Census

The Irish census of 1901 & 1912 are the earliest available.  The returns for 1831-1871 were destroyed 22 June 1922 during the Irish Civil War in a fire at the Public Record Office of Ireland now the National Archives of Ireland.  The 1881 and 1891 were pulped for paper by the British during WW1.  These were the only census records the British destroyed for this purpose.

The 1901 census consisted of four forms/pages for each household.  Three of the forms have been attached below.
1.  Enumerator's abstract - details of number of houses in townland & occupants
2.  Household - filled in and signed by head of household
3.  House & Building - details of the houses

Following are “our” Walsh families who residing in Mayo during this census.

  • Hugh Walsh

  • John Walsh, brother of Hugh

  • Michael Walsh, son of Hugh

Not found in 1901 are the following daughters of Hugh - Mary, Margaret, Anne plus his son Patrick.   Patrick married Anne Corcoran 11 February 1902 at the Kilfian Church.  Other unknowns are three children of Martin Walsh, sons Frank and Patrick and daughter Eleanor.

Cloonleedin Walsh Family . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . #3

WALSH Family of Mayo, Ireland Descendant Chart

February 2014

I use Reunion for Macintosh as my genealogy software.  Below is a four generation chart for the WALSH Family.  The purple represents the first generation with Martin WALSH, second generation is orange, third generation yellow and fourth green.  Most persons in the succeeding generations are alive therefore only four generations are posted.  You will note many unknowns, as the date and place of birth, death and marriages.  I am not including documentation now.  My intention is to post family group sheets and give the documentation at that time.

It is my hope that  many of the unknowns will be discovered.   Then we will be able to complete our family history.  Personally, a unknown is my great grandmother, Bridget GARVIN WALSH, death date and place.  Bridget was alive in 1914 when her husband John WALSH died.  I have found no record of her after that date.

We have many families here including the WALSH.  There is PEACE, HERBERT,  CORCORAN,  GARVIN,  DONNELLY,  DILLON,  RUDDY,  CONNOR,  McKEON,  SANFORD,  McHALE,  QUIN,  TAYLOR,  CULLEN, GILLESPIE, TIVNAN, BRESLANE, and the unknowns.

Bridget WALSH #2 is on the above page 6 and Bridget WALSH #3 is on page 8

Do you know their location? . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .#2

WHERE DID THE BRIDGET'S GO -

Bridget #1 -
I have no additional information of this Bridget.  When Bridget WALSH arrived in 1897 she stated she was going to Mrs. MURPHY in West Milton, Saratoga County, New York.  It would be helpful if Mrs. MURPHY could be located in the 1900 census or any other source in West Milton.  The 1900 U.S. census has a Bridget MURPHY, wife of Patrick, lived in Milton, Saratoga County, New York.  There are no other people living in this household.  The death certificate and cemetery records for this Bridget MURPHY stated she was born in Tipperary, parents Michael READY and Mary O’BRIEN.  Patrick was born in Queens County, Ireland.        UPDATE - See Post #20

Bridget Walsh McHale 1959 *

Bridget #2
Bridget WALSH McHALE (1880-1971) was a daughter of  John WALSH (1842-1914) and Bridget GARVIN (1845- ).  She married Michael Joseph McHALE in Baltimore, Maryland, U.S.A. shortly after her arrival.  Bridget and Michael were the parents of three daughters but had no grandchildren. Michael’s parents were John McHALE and Bridget Delia O’MALLEY who were married in 1868 in Kilfian Parish, Mayo.

Bridget #3 -
Bridget WALSH was the daughter of Michael WALSH (ca 1860- ) and Bridget BRESLANE (1863- ) who married 16 February 1885 at Ardagh Chapel, County Mayo.  Bridget #2 and Bridget #3 are first cousins, once removed as Michael is Bridget #2’s uncle.  Michael’s father was Patrick WALSH.

Bridget is found as an 11 year old in the 1901 Irish census of Rathreagh Parish, Townland Carrowkeel.  Also in the household are her father Michael age 40, mother Bridget 38, brother Patrick 15, sister Mary 14, brother John 7, sister Ellen 5, sister Maggie 2 and brother Michael 3 months.  In this census, her sister Catherine age 12 is found with grandmother Ellen BRISLANE in Townland Cloonagh More.

In 1905 brother Patrick age 19 and sister Catherine age 16 immigrated to the U.S. to join their Aunt Mary Rouse in Tuxedo, New York.

After her arrival in New York in 1909, Bridget was enumerated in the 1910 census of Tuxedo, New York age 19 and a servant/kitchen cook in the household of Reverend George W. Douglas.  Also in this home was Mary ROUSE, a cook and widow who was born in Ireland in 1866.  Mary is the person Bridget was to join when she immigrated.  Mary’s maiden name and marriage is unknown.  From immigration and census records it is known that she was an aunt to Bridget and immigrated in 1885.  Bridget and Mary are found with the same family in the 1920 census in Manhattan, New York.  Bridget was then age 26, a kitchen maid/cook.  I have no knowledge of Bridget WALSH #3 after this date.

Does anyone have more information of Bridget #1 or Bridget #3?
