WALSH/GARVIN Family of Cloonaleedin . . . . #22

Need help to complete this family.  Do you have the information?                                                                       ourmayofamilies@gmail.com

The family of John WALSH (1842-1914) & Bridget GARVIN (1845-1929) consisted of 10 children.   (See Post #3 February 2014)  Three of the sons I have very limited information.  Recently I was able to complete the life cycle of daughter Ellen.

Sons -
1.  Martin WALSH, born 18 April 1871.  He was not with the family in the 1901 or 1911 census.  It has been relayed that he was a policeman in Ireland and was hit in the head and died.  Another note Martin was in the US and drowned in the Hudson River, New York.

2.  John WALSH, born 25 March 1882.  He was home in Cloonaleedin, age 17, when the 1901 census was taken.  Notes - John was a street car conductor in New York City, US and drowned when a car went over a pier on the water front.

3.  Patrick WALSH, born 10 July 1884.  Patrick, age 15, was home in 1901.  I have no additional notes for him.

Daughter-                                                                                                                                                                   Ellen WALSH was the fourth child, born 14 November 1873.  Discovering additional information about her has been difficult and elusive.
I was told Ellen married a DILLON and his given name was Michael.  Ellen was not with the family in the 1901 and 1911 census.  There was a Thomas DILLON and wife Ellen living in Rathreagh, Mayo in these two census.  No marriage record for this marriage or any Ellen WALSH/DILLON marriage has been discovered in the Civil Records at irishgenealogy.ie.  In the 1911 census Ellen BARRETT age 9. a visitor, was living with Ellen and Thomas.  I believe she was the daughter of Honor “Onny” GARVIN BARRETT and not with her birth family in this census.  Onny was Ellen WALSH DILLON’s aunt.
Ellen DILLON, a widow, died 36 February 1939 at District Hospital in Ballina, Mayo.  Thomas DILLON death is not in the Civil Records.  The death of Thomas DILLON of Rathrea was recorded 3 March 1931 at ancestry.com “Ireland, Select Catholic Death & Burial Records, Kilfian”.
Another correspondent told me the Dillons were childless and that two of Anthony J. WALSH children spent some time with them.  Ellen was a sister of Anthony.  In 1911 Ellen stated she had no children.

Ellen WALSH born 14 November 1873 Cloonaleedin, Kilfian, Mayo, Ireland ;  died 26 February 1939 Ballina, Mayo, Ireland, a widow;   Married ca 1896 County Mayo, Ireland - Thomas DILLON born ca 1860 County Mayo, Ireland;  died 3 March 1931 Rathrea, Kilfian, Mayo, Ireland

GARVIN FAMILY -

Anthony GARVIN & Bessy __ Family - A recently discovered daughter

Honor “Onny” GARVIN.  She would be the youngest known child of the family.  Onny was born ca 1854, before civil registration, and died 10 December 1920.  Her death record is not yet available online but should be within the next year or two.  She was buried at Kilmurray Cemetery, Mayo.

Francis GARVIN -

I have alway thought Francis GARVIN could possibly be the father of Anthony GARVIN.  The Kilfian Parish records, available online at National Library of Ireland and Find My Past, recorded the death of Francis Garvin 15 December 1827.  He was a resident of Cloonatafinna at the time of his death.  Finding where Cloonatafinna was has been difficult.  I recently discovered Cloonatafinna was a village in the townland of Belladoan.  Belladoan is adjacent to Cartronrathroe.  Anthony GARVIN died in Cartonrathroe

2019 - Correspondence with DNA WALSH match on MyHeritage who father was Bridget #3 brother.  Quoted from my DNA cousin “Bridget returned to Ireland in the 1930’s and married Patrick McAndrew.   She had saved her money working in American and was thus independent when she returned to Ireland.  Patrick and Bridget lived a very happy life in a lovely house he built on the outskirts of Ballina. The Irish girls working for the Douglas household were paid $7 a week and Mary Rouse doled out $1 to each girl and put the balance into accounts at the Emigrant Savings Bank for them".  I have checked the Emigrant Savings Bank online.  The records available are 1850-1883 therefore of no value in locating information for the young women who worked at the Douglas household.

Patrick McANDREW married Bridget WALSH 16 June 1933 at the Cathedral of Ballina.-

I wondered when Bridget & Patrick died and if they had headstones in a Mayo cemetery.  The cemeteries in north-east Mayo have been photographed & indexed per cemetery.  There are 3 in the Ballina area.  In the first one checked, their stone was found.  Bridget and Pat are buried Leigue Cemetery, Ballina, Mayo Ireland.  I was so happy to know Bridget led a contented life..  May she not be forgotten.

The Hunt Continues -
Bridget #2  -  Still looking to discover this Bridget, daughter of Anthony WALSH and Bridget FLATHERY, or any relatives/descendants.  Bridget immigrated in 1897 with Ann DONNELLY.  I discovered several of Bridget's siblings who lived in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, U.S.

Bridget's brother John WALSH died 4 March 1940 Pittsburg, Pennsylvania and buried at St. Mary Cemetery, Pittsburg.  He immigrated in 1907 and never married.  His brother-in-law James TUNNEY was the informant for John’s death certificate.  James' named John’s parents as Anthony WALSH and Bridget FLAHERTY of Ireland.

Sister Agnes WALSH was born ca 1881, died 2 March 1965 in Pittsburg.  Agnes married James TUNNEY 10 April 1902.  Their daughter, Gertrude, was the informant on the death certificate and only reported that Agnes father surname was Walsh.  Agnes was buried at St. Mary Cemetery.  I have not located a birth registration for Agnes in Ireland.  There is some who think Agnes may be Bridget who changed her given name after arriving in the U.S.  In several census Agnes stated she immigrated 1897 and 1898.  In checking the Ellis Island site, I could not find any Agnes WALSH age 18/19, from Mayo during those years.

Brother Patrick WALSH died 29 January 1932 in Pittsburg.  His wife Mary SHANEFELTER WALSH was the informant for his death certificate.  She named his parents as Anthony WALSH and Bridget FLAHERTY of Ireland.

Recent Walsh DNA Results/Discoveries . . . . . . #19

My Heritage, an online genealogy program, offered free download of DNA data to their large database.  I submitted my data and within a week received results from this company,  My hope was they have people interested in family research/history that are not in Ancestry or FamilyTree databases.
There were four hits and one was a Walsh in Mayo, Michael WALSH (1901-1978).  My research had discovered Michael’s parents were Michael WALSH (ca 1860- ) & Bridget BRESLANE  (1863-1926) of Carrowkeel, Mayo.  Michael 1860 is first cousin of Thomas WALSH (1867-1953).  Michael’s son John Joseph WALSH (1894-1978) wrote a poem for the adult children of Thomas when he died in 1953.  I have been looking for this John J. WALSH for years.  The poem is on post #7 of this blog.

With the information gained from the DNA, Ancestry trees were searched.  A find was made to a tree which included the Michael WALSH 1860.  Now it will be possible to update post # 3 and the family of Michael and his wife Bridget BRESLANE.  Most of the children of this family immigrated to New York state, U.S. which was not known.  This tree has documentation from Ancestry’s databases some I did not have.  Emails have been sent to the submitters at My Heritage and Ancestry so we can collaborate on our knowledge of the families.

WALSH Photos . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . #18

John WALSH and Bridget GARVIN were the parents of ten children born between 1867 - 1887.  The births of the children have been documented in the Irish Civil Records.  Six of the siblings marriages and deaths have been discovered.  Three a photograph has been found - Thomas, Bridget, and Anthony Joseph.  Thomas is the eldest and Anthony Joseph the youngest children of the family.  It is surprising the resemblance of the two brothers whose age span was twenty years.  Or is it the similar bushy mustaches which enhance the likeness?   Thomas was in his late thirties when his photo was taken in 1904.  Anthony appears to be in his mid to late twenties.  These appear to be studio photos.

The only photograph of Bridget WALSH McHALE, child number seven,  is from her 80th birthday party.  This photo was taken outdoors in Baltimore, Maryland, U.S.  Bridget married, had three daughters but no grandchildren. There is a photo of the above Thomas WALSH, her brother, in 1946 when he is 78.  This photo was taken in 1946 at the funeral of his wife Anne DONNELLY  WALSH,  Piedmont, West Virginia, U.S.  It is difficult to see any resemblance in these two siblings.  The settings may be a factor.

GARVIN NEWS . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . #17

In late 2017 the online digitized Irish Civil Records at IrishGenealogy.ie were searched to see if there was additional information on “our” Garvin family.  Garvin was not a common name in Mayo in the 1800’s.  To my delight another daughter was discovered for Anthony GARVIN in the marriage records.

Honor Garvey of Carton Rathroe, daughter of Anthony Garvey,
married John BARRETT  26 February 1876  at the Chapel of Kilfian,
      Mayo.

Honor and John had nine children.  When the births were registered the name of the mother was -  Honor BARRETT formerly GARVIN -  in six of the births.
Honor was born ca 1851-1854 according to her reported age in the 1901 and 1911 census of Coolnabinnia, Mayo, Ireland.  She died in 1920 and was buried at Kilmurray Cemetery, Mayo.  John BARRETT, her husband, died in 1931.

Another DNA Match - October 2018.  The granddaughter of Honor GARVIN and John BARRETT is a match with Ancestry DNA.  We share 173 centimorgans which makes us 2c1r, second cousins once removed.  I now correspond with several members of the Honor GARVIN/John BARRETT family.

DNA . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . #16

Until recently written documents and oral recollection were the basis of genealogical research and building family trees.  At the beginning of the 21st century DNA testing became the new tool for discovering family history.

Testing for DNA is popular in the USA where most people who have taken the various tests DNA live.  It has been estimated that over 12 million persons have tested their DNA.

I tested with Ancestry and FamilyTree several years ago. With Ancestry, I am 48% Ireland/Scotland/Wales & 5% English.  FamilyTree results is are British Isles 55%.  My mitochondrial haplogroup is J.  Mitochondrial DNA is inherited from the female line therefore from my great grandmother Margaret MAHADY, grandmother Anne DONNELLY, my mother, myself, then to my daughters, and granddaughters.

There have been several successful finds/matches on my grandfather Thomas WALSH line.

On my grandmother, Anne DONNLLY, line Ancestry DNA has recently discovered several matches.  My WALSH  & DONNELLY families were in the Kilfian Parish and the newly discovered DONNELLY families are in Ballycastle Parish.  Below is a image of the Catholic Dioceses at the National Library of Ireland highlighting Ballycastle and Kilfian Dioceses of County Mayo.  These two are adjacent to one another.

One of the newly found DNA cousin's ancestor was Peter DONNELLY of Ballycastle, County Mayo.   Our relationship is rated “Confidence Good, Predicted Relationship: 4th cousin”.  I share 22.8 centimorgans with this DNA cousin.  I believe this match may be a 3rd cousin.  My great grandfather John “Jack” DONNELLY was born ca 1821 and died 1 August 1912 at Ballygowan, County Mayo.  It is presently my belief John DONNELLY and Peter DONNELLY may be brothers.

Peter DONNELLY 1822-1892

Peter was born ca 1822, died 10 March 1892 at Glenurla, Ballycastle, Mayo.  Peter married Sarah TOYE who died at Glenurla  5 May 1894.  They were the parents of the following 7 children:

1.  Mary DONNELLY born ca 1861 County Mayo, died 14 March 1909, Springfield, Massachusetts, USA; married Charles CHEVALIER, 21 November 1891, Springfield, Massachusetts, USA.  Their children were Mary, Sarah Regina, Albert Henry

2.  Catherine DONNELLY born ca 1863, died 21 February 1938, Glenurla, Ballycastle, Mayo; married John McDONNELL 3 July 1902, Chapel of Ballycastle, Mayo.  They had no issue.

3.  Martin DONNELLY born 4 December 1865, Ballymachugh, Ballycastle, Mayo.  His birth was recorded in the Irish Civil Records of Births & his baptism-10 December 1865 at Ballycastle Parish, Mayo.  Martin died 20 June 1933 at Glenurla, Ballycastle, Mayo.  Martin married twice - first, 4 February 1891 Chapel of Ballycastle, Mayo to Catherine McCANDRESS who died 16 July 1904.  They had 5 sons - Martin, Pat, Michael, Thomas & John.  After the death of his wife Martin married Catherine BELL, 3 February 1906 at the Church of Ballycastle, Mayo.  There were no children from this union.

4.  Sarah DONNELLY born March 1868 at Ballymachugh, Ballycastle, Mayo.  Her birth was not recorded in the Civil Records, she stated her birth date in the U.S. census.  Sarah died 15 April 1940 Harford, Connecticut, USA.  Married John J. SHEA (1865-1917) 13 May 1891 in Springfield, Massachusetts USA

5.  Honoria “Nora" DONNELLY born 22 March 1868 Ballymachugh, Ballycastle, Mayo, her birth was recorded in the Irish Civil Records of Births.  Nora died 16 July 1917 at Wethersfield, Connecticut, USA.  She never married.

6.  John DONNELLY born 10 May 1871, Ballymachugh, Ballycastle, Mayo & baptized 14 May 1871 at Ballycastle Parish  His birth recorded in the Irish Civil Records of Births.

 7.  Peter DONNELLY born 25 April 1873 Ballymachugh, Ballycastle, Mayo & baptized 4 May 1873 at Ballycastle Parish  His birth record was recorded in the Irish Civil Records of Births.  Peter died 27 February 1959 Brookline, Norfolk, Massachusetts; Peter married Ann HENRY 27 October 1901 in Brookline, Norfolk, Massachusetts, USA.  Ann died before 1920.  They were the parents of James, Mary, Joseph, Sarah, Helen.

15 August 2018

Ancestry has discovered another DONNELLY DNA match.  Once again, I believe this may be a brother or cousin of “my” John DONNELLY.  This match is to a grandchild of Patrick Donnelly, first child of Michael Donnelly.  This DNA cousin and I share 53 centimorgans.

Michael DONNELLY 1818-1898

Michael Donnelly was born ca 1818 in County Mayo and died 6 October 1898 at Kilbride, Mayo.  Michael married Bridget BARRETT ca 1863 in Mayo.

Michael and Bridget were the parents of the following seven known children.  These births were recorded in the County Mayo,  Civil Registration District - Killala,  District of Ballycastle,  Townland-Kilbride.  Their baptisms were at Ballycastle Parish, County Mayo.

1.  Patrick DONNELLY   1864-1926   Born ca March 1864 in Kilbride, Mayo.  Patrick’s birth was not documented in the Irish civil registrations or the Ballycastle Parish baptisms as his siblings.  Irish civil registrations started in January 1864 and compliance was spotty in the beginning.  The Ballycastle Parish baptism records begin in August 1864.  Patrick immigrated to the U.S. where he married Annie McMahan  21 July 1897 at Butte, Silver Bow, Montana.  On the marriage license Patrick named his parents and place of birth in Ireland.   Patrick and Annie were the parents of six - Eileen Theresa born in Montana, John, Michael Clancy, Thomas, Catherine Maria, Joseph Patrick.   The remaining five were born in the state of Washington.  In April 1926 Patrick died in Tacoma, Pierce, Washington.  His wife Annie died 31 December 1947 in Seattle, King, Washington.

2.  Michael DONNELLY   1866-_   Born 24 July 1866.  The baptism was not found. The 1901 Irish census of Kilbride, Lackan North, Mayo found Michael DONNELLY, single, age 30, living with Bridget DONNELLY, his mother.  There were no other Donnellys in Kilbride.  I believe he may be the Michael DONNELLY of Carrakillean, father Michael, who in 1909 married Catherine KEARNS in Crossmolina Parish, Mayo.  This couple was found in the 1911 Irish census living in Mayo, townland Carrakillean - DONNELLY Michael age 42, wife Kate age 24 and daughter Bridget, an infant.
